Guess? Was set up by Georges, Armand, Paul, and Maurice Marciano, 4 brothers born in Debdou village, Morocco. They traveled to CA from France in 1977 and set up the company in 1981. Seed money to start the business came from the Nakash family, owners of the Jordache denim empire. Their 1st production was a three-zipper style of jeans they called “Marilyn” (Style # 1015). Department stores and fashion critics were at first reluctant to carry the new ‘stone washed denim’ jeans, but in December when Bloomingdale’s lastly agreed with Georges to stock 2 dozen pairs of the recently jeans as a favor to the brothers. They sold rapidly. Their advertisement campaigns started in 1982, and they introduced their iconic black-and-white ads in 1985. The advertisements have won many Clio Awards. Their fashion models have included a number of widely-recognized supermodels, a lot of whom firstly achieved prominence thru the ad campaigns.
